BRIEF HISTORY OF SERCHHIP DISTRICT COURT

The District Court, Serchhip, was established and began functioning in September 2009. In its initial stage, the Court operated from the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Serchhip, due to the unavailability of a separate court building. With the continuous support of the Hon’ble Gauhati High Court, Aizawl Bench, and the Government of Mizoram, the permanent District Court Building was completed and officially inaugurated by Hon’ble Mr. Justice Michael Zothankhuma, Judge, Gauhati High Court on 9th June, 2016, marking a significant milestone in the judicial development of Serchhip District.

To further expand judicial outreach and facilitate easier access to justice for litigants residing in distant areas, a Circuit Court of Additional District and Sessions Judge under the District Court, Serchhip, was formally inaugurated on 19th September, 2025 by Hon’ble Chief Minister Pu Lalduhoma. The Circuit Court functions under the administrative control of the District & Sessions Judge, Aizawl Judicial District, and aims to bring judicial services closer to the people of the district.

    ABOUT SERCHHIP DISTRICT

Serchhip District was created on 15th September, 1998, after being carved out from the erstwhile Aizawl District. Covering an area of approximately 1,421 square kilometres, it is the smallest district in Mizoram by area but one of the most progressive in literacy and governance.

The district is bounded by Aizawl District to the north and northwest, Lunglei District to the south, Champhai District to the east, and shares an international boundary with Myanmar to the southeast. The major police stations in Serchhip District are Serchhip Police Station located at I.O.C Veng, New Serchhip; Thenzawl Police Station at Ramthar Veng, Thenzawl; and North Vanlaiphai Police Station situated at Forest Veng, North Vanlaiphai. These police stations serve as key law enforcement centers across the district’s major towns and surrounding villages, encompassing approximately 40 villages in total.

As per the 2011 Census of India, Serchhip District has a population of approximately 64,937, with a literacy rate of 97.91%, among the highest in India. The sex ratio stands at 977 females per 1000 males. The principal languages spoken are Mizo and English, and the majority of the population practices Christianity.

Geographically, the district is characterized by moderate hills and fertile valleys, with an average elevation of around 888 metres above sea level. Major rivers such as the Tlawng, Tuikum, Mat, Tuichang, and Lau flow through the district, enriching its natural beauty and supporting its agricultural base. Over 60% of the district’s total area is under forest cover, making it one of the most environmentally rich regions in Mizoram.

    JURISDICTION AND FUNCTIONING

The District Court, Serchhip, functions under the Aizawl Judicial District and exercises both civil and criminal jurisdiction within its territorial limits. It operates under the superintendence of the Gauhati High Court, Aizawl Bench, and forms an integral part of the Mizoram Judicial Service.

In addition to regular court proceedings, the District Court actively participates in Lok Adalats, Legal Awareness Camps, and other legal aid initiatives organized under the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) to promote access to justice and enhance legal literacy among the citizens.

    CONCLUSION

Since its inception, the District Court, Serchhip, has remained steadfast in its mission to uphold justice and strengthen the rule of law. The establishment of the permanent court building in 2016 and the inauguration of the Circuit Court in 2025 further reinforce its commitment to ensuring efficient judicial administration and accessibility of justice for all citizens of Serchhip District.
